Firefox 3 this upcoming Tuesday, June 17th …. Yeahhh
On my other Blog (Here) I wrote about some very useful Firefox extensions I use.
I have just revealed now that also OpenOffice.org has extensions:
The one I have just seen is: The Sun Wiki Publisher.
This OpenOffice.org (2.4 or higher) extension enables you to create Wiki articles on MediaWiki servers without having to know the syntax of the MediaWiki markup language.
Nice … I’m going to try it, and to export from my OOo at work to the internal Wiki.
I have just read on the blog of the Haifa university Library about ” Open Access – גישה חופשית למידע ופרסום אלקטרוני.”
The presentation was a part of meetings held at the library about information in the library and on the World Wide Web.
The open publication possibilities were introduced, as well as economic models.
Among other issues – the presentation cites a decision of Harvard university faculty to collect and disseminate scholarly articles. Some of the new Israeli projects are discussed and also copyrights matters and the solutions offered by “Creative Commons“.

למצגת בעברית – “Open Access” : Presentation. (ב- PDF)
BTW
There is “Hebrew Creative Commons” – קריאייטיב קומונז בעברית. Cool!
This post is based on:
Gerard: “PC-BSD vs DesktopBSD; similarities & differences“.
In: Gerard. FreeBSD – the unknown Giant [blog on the Internet]. [posted: January 19, 2008] – [cited: May 17, 2008].

I agree with all what Gerard wrote – and here I write the same in Hebrew
* מגובה ע”י תמיכה מקצועית של חברת iXsy stems .
* מציעה מערכת ניהול חבילות נוספת / אופציונלית להתקנת חבילות תוכנה בינריות – בשם “PBI” – שבאה עם ממשק גראפי וידידותי של “הבא” “הבא” “אשר” וזהו. זאת בנוסף למערכת ניהול החבילות הסטנדרטית של FreeBSD (ports ו- pkg).
* כוללת תמיכה ב- Adobe Flash7 & 9.
—————————————————————————————————-
DesktopBSD :
* פרוייקט המנוהל ע”י מתנדבים בלבד, ללא גיבוי של חברה מסחרית. בעל מחזור שחרור גרסאות איטי.
* נראה כתואם לקו של FreeBSD מבחינת התקנה וקונפיגורציה, בתוספת של ממשק גראפי קל לשימוש.
* כולל מנהל חבילות גראפי, להתקנה, עדכון וניהול של חבילות התוכנה ומערכת ה- ports של FreeBSD.
* תשתית בניית החבילות הנה עצמאית, כך שניתן למצוא חבילות בינריות מעודכנות של הרבה תוכנות לשולחן העבודה.
* זמין גם עבור פלטפורמת AMD64.
=============================================
יתרון שמצאתי ל- DesktopBSD על פני PC-BSD הוא היותו של הדיסק של DesktopBSD גם Live CD.
I have installed FreeBSD many times on various PC’s I used.
It is really a great system – it’s strong and quick as any Linux distribution. It has its own fans. It has many packages, but not as much as linux.
For this – FreeBSD has developed a compatibility layer to enable installation of Linux packages – such as Flash plugin.
I really love FreeBSD, It is great for a server, but it’s sometimes hard work to do for a a desktop –
Flash plugin didn’t always work, so firefox crashed.
A whole configuration was needed to enable automatic mount of USB stick.
Therefor I decided to try DesktopBSD or PC-BSD.
I have found some info about those two distributions (well… I mean “systems”. “distribution” is for Linux… ).
What a pity… after trying the alternate ubuntu CD of 8.04 I almost lost my “Home” directory.
For Ms-Windows guys: it is somehow like your local “C:” drive, or – if tobe more precise – like the “My Documents and settings”.
I was lucky enough to have two things:
1) A backup of all important documents;
and:
2) Mandriva 2008.1 Gnome CD that I tried “exposed” it – It showed me the lost “/home” directories – so I could take a second backup. It is a separate partition – which is in the Ms-Windows world a logical disk / hard drive.
So … I was so happy with what Mandriva showed me that I really think to go back to this lovely Linux distribution. I still have good memories from it, when it was still called “Mandrake”.
But for the meantime – and since my “/home” was no really gone I re-install Ubuntu 8.04 from scratch.
I told the installer – of course – to use the same /sda7 partition for “/home” without formatting it.
After I downloaded the Alternate install CD of Ubuntu 8.0.4, I run this:
gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade"
The upgrade in process:
Post Mortem:
It deleted my /home dir. So I need to install from scratch.
Or to consider Mandriva.
I have just read a comparison between Ubuntu 8.04 and Mandriva 2008.1 on Whatsup.org.il : :ראש בראש: השוואה בין מנדריבה One 2008.1 ואובונטו 8.04
I’m writing from the PC, not the laptop.
This one – the PC – runs Debian and it’s quite steady. But I don’t use it very often.
I like the laptop which is in upgrade of the Ubuntu, from 7.10 to 8.04.
I tried to do all “regular” upgrade instructions for the laptop, including this (Network upgrade):
meorero@myubuntu:~$ sudo do-release-upgrade Checking for a new ubuntu release 0% [Working ...
But it ends with the following error:
Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by: * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. So… Now I’m downloading the ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso CD from the mirror of isoc.org.il.
Just like my revious time, when upradng from 6.06 to 7.10, the “Update Manager” did not recognize it automatically – so I need to do it myself.
I follow the instructions under: “Network upgrade for Kubuntu desktops (recommended)” – on the Ubuntu site.
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading
Even though I have the “classic” Ubuntu – I mean the Gnome desktop – this does seem to start working:
1. Install update-manager-core if it is not already installed:
sudo aptitude install update-manager-core
2.
Launch the upgrade tool:
sudo do-release-upgrade
3.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
Ubuntu – this is what I currently use as my “mmain” desktop ditribution.
Now I have just read here (Whatsup.org.il), here (Linmagazine.co.il), and here (Ubuntu site) that Ubuntu 8.04 has just been released.
I hope this upgrade ill be successful and easy…
